(08th) Purchases for the Department Project

Today all the members went to buy the required materials for the department project. We had to spend time walking here and there looking for hardware stores to check the prices. Finally we decided to buy the required materials from a hardware store at Gansaba Junction. We bought a Vanista board (9mm) and a Formica sheet (0.5mm) from Sirithilina Plywood shop which is situated in Gansaba Junction.

We delivered them in a small lorry to the university. We brought them to the department with the help of Mr Saliya.

(09th) Mission Possible

Today, the day before our final presentation we gathered to the Department of English to accomplish our department project of repairing the damaged tables. Even if we have already sent a letter to the maintenance department asking for carpenters to get the tables repaired, it was really difficult for us to get them to attend to the work. However we finally succeeded in getting a carpenter and his assistant. They began the task at about 9.00 am and finished it at about 1.30 pm.

We are so happy that we were finally able to complete all our projects successfully.

(07) Department of History and Archaeology

According to the Department of History and Archaeology, the department needs two clocks for S 21 and S 01. Therefore we decided to donate two clocks to the above mentioned lecture halls in the department.

The clocks were accepted by the department clerk and his assistant as reflected in the above photographs.

(6th) Change of Plans

The community project of Planting Casuarina Trees appeared to be a complex project because of its complicated approval process. Since the Vice Chancellor Prof N.L.A Karunaratne's personal involvement is required in the approval process we were asked to wait till the Vice Chancellor returns to Sri Lanka to, which scheduled for the 10th of April, 2014 in order to  proceed with the project.

Since the final presentation was due on 9th of April, we decided to look for an alternative Community Project. As a result we decided to go ahead with donating clocks which was already there in the shortlist of Community Projects.

Then we searched for places where clocks are essentially needed. Finally we got to know that the Department of History and Archaeology needs clocks for their lecture halls. Then we decided to donate clocks to the Department of History and Archaeology. We went in search for clocks on the same day.

(5th) Three Tables

As for our department project, we consider repairing the tables outside department a brilliant idea since the current condition of those tables are pathetic as they are terribly damaged. Even though the project requires a lot of effort, money and time we decided to stick to the plan thinking that the sustainability of the project will benefit the future generation of the Department of English.

(4th) Kasa Gas Sewana

While selling pens we were exploring the feasibility of the project proposals. Though we were able to narrow down our choices we  could not decide hastily since the quality of the project was a prime concern. Therefore we talked to students outside the department and got their feedback. Most of them thought that the university has enough dustbins inside the university and adding more dustbins to them will not make any difference. Therefore we thought that planting Casuarina trees would be a sustainable community project since even if we leave the university those trees would always be there giving shade to a lot future students.
